TL:DR
Share your goals early - context is gold.
Be honest (even if your feedback feels random).
Trust the process - good design takes time.
Keep communication open.
Think about the bigger picture.
And most importantly: enjoy it!
So, you’ve decided to hire a designer.. daunting, right? Whether you’re getting your first logo or going all-in with a full rebrand, it’s a big step.
But here’s the thing: the best results don’t just come from design skills, they come from collaboration. The smoother the process between you and your designer, the stronger the outcome will be.
Here are a few easy (and honest) tips for getting the most out of the experience - straight from someone who’s been on both sides of the feedback loop.
1. Give a Little Context
Design isn’t just about what looks nice; it’s about what fits. The more I know about your goals, audience, and what your business is all about, the better I can tailor the visuals.
Don’t worry about sounding “too detailed” Everything from your target audience to how you want people to feel when they see your brand helps shape the direction.
(If you’re not sure where to start, my Branding Packages page gives you a good idea of how we build a brand from the ground up.)
2. Be Honest (and Don’t Overthink It)
If something doesn’t feel right.. say it. You don’t have to have the perfect words for feedback (that’s my job to translate). Sometimes “it feels a bit corporate” or “this colour just gives me toothpaste vibes” is all I need to understand where to go next.
Design is a team effort, and your honest thoughts are what make it yours.
3. Trust the Process (Seriously)
I know.. waiting for concepts can be tough. You’re excited! But every stage has a purpose. From research and sketching to refinement and mockups, design is built step by step for a reason.
At Brandl, I always follow a clear process. You can sneak a peek at how it works here, but the short version? There’s method in the madness.
4. Communication Is Everything
You don’t need to reply instantly (we all have inbox fatigue), but keeping the conversation flowing really helps. Regular feedback keeps momentum going, avoids crossed wires, and usually saves time in the long run.
If you’re running behind or need extra time to decide, just let me know. Projects work best when we’re both in the loop.
5. Think Beyond the Deliverables
It’s easy to focus on “the thing” the logo, the website, the social media graphics, but branding is really about the experience. How do people feel when they interact with your business? What makes them remember you?
That’s why I often encourage clients to think about the next steps like Marketing Support or Web Content to keep everything consistent once the design is done.
6. Enjoy It!
This one’s underrated. Working with a designer should be fun! It’s creative, collaborative, and a chance to see your business come to life visually. It’s not about perfection; it’s about building something that feels right for you.
